1917, gli austriaci volevano arrivare alla pianura veneta, il Pasubio rappresentava uno degli ultimi fronti italiani ancora da conquistare.
Nell’inverno di quell’anno, inziavano i lavori di costruzione della strada, che permise il passaggio di uomini e dotazioni, con qualsiasi stagione e tempo, al riparo dalla vista del nemico, grazie ai 2.300 metri in galleria.
Cannonate, esplosioni e una bufera di neve causarono modifiche morfologiche al monte ma soprattutto causarono enormi perdite umane, sai da un fronte che dall’altro, che si sfidavano sui cosiddetti Denti.
Un’azione a sorpresa italiana, nel 1918, e gli austriaci sono costretti ad abbandonare le loro posizioni, preannunciando una vittoria italiana.
Non riesco ad immaginare come i 600 minatori siano riusciti a scavare queste gallerie, non riesco ad immaginare come i soldati siano riusciti a portare in cima i rifornimenti, non riesco ad immaginare il freddo gelido dell’inverno all’interno delle gallerie!
La parte della strada esterna è bella, agevole, con un panorama mozzafiato!
La maggior parte del percorso in galleria è comunque agevole, a parte alcune di esse che sono veramente impegnative, come la 19, lunga più di 300 metri, ripida e con una salita a chiocciola.
Pavimentazione scoscesa, scivolosa, gocce d’acqua, soffitto basso.
Assolutamente necessario l’uso di scarponi da trekking e torcia fontale! Io non avevo la torcia e la luce del cellulare non bastava, sono scivolato qualche volta e ho preso una bella testata! Ahia!
Ecco, magari consiglio un caschetto se si è alti, io sono alto 1 e 83 e se non stavo attento e piegato me ne sarei prese altre, di testate.
Dopo 3 ore, a 1928 metri, siamo giunti al rifugio Papa, breve visita obbligata al rifugio, e pranzo sulla parte erbosa appena sopra al rifugio. Pranzo con vista direi!
C’era la possibilità di andare fino ai Denti ma non ce la sentiamo, un po’ per le gambe, un po’ per le tempistiche.
Scendiamo lungo la strada degli Scarubbi, bella liscia, ma non contenti, prendiamo le scorciatoie ripide e siamo alla macchina in un paio d’ore, occhio alle ginocchia però!

I can’t imagine how the 600 miners managed to dig these galleries, I can’t imagine how the soldiers brought the equipement until the top, I can’t imagine the winter cold inside the galleries!
The external part of the way is easy, smooth, with a breathtaking panorama!
Also the majority of the way inside the galleries is smooth but in some parts it’s very hard, as the 19th, more the 300 meters of lenght, very steep.
Paving steep, slippery, water drop, low ceiling.
It’s absolutely necessary using trekking boots and a frontal torch. I forgot the torch and the smartphone light was not enough, I sometimes slipped and I took a header! Ouch!
I suggest to get a helmet if you are tall, I’m 1.83 m and if I didn’t pay attention, I would have taken a lot of other headers!
After 3 hours, at 1928 meters, we arrived to the refuge Papa, we had a little tour of it and we had lunch in the upper grass part. Lunch with a view, I’d say!
There was the possibility to visit the Denti but we didn’t do it, because of the fatigue and the time.
We came down along the way of Scarubbi, really smooth, but we took some steep shortcuts and we reached the car in 2 hours. A hard work for the knee.
